There is no need to spend money on a gym membership as you have everything you need to get fit. One of the biggest fitness trends in 2014 is strength training without weights. Here are a few Home Workout Routines Without Weights that will help you drop the weight and get fit.

1. Planking. The plank works the entire front side of the body and helps to tone your muscles and works the core like no other exercise. Getting into the Plank position easy as you just lay down on the floor and then come up onto your forearms and toes. You can do this with or without shoes on. Create a straight line from your neck down to your feet and make sure your butt does not arch down and hold your stomach in engaging your core muscles. Keep this taunt plank position for 30 seconds, relax for 30 seconds and do it again 3 times. The goal is to be able to hold this for two minutes.

2. Burpees. This is one of the hardest exercises to do but will burn a ton of calories, plus it tones every muscle in your body. To begin, stand upright and then drop down to the ground into a push-up position. Do one push up and then bring your legs back to your body and then jump up with your arms reaching high into the sky, then come back down from the jump into a standing position. Can you believe that was just one rep? Start doing 3 sets of 5 burpees and when you are stronger do 3 sets of 10 burpees. Rest for a minute in between each set.

Insanity Workout – Week 4 Complete #Fitness #Insanity #Beachbody (I Fit in My Skinny Jeans)

Some of you may already know that I’ve been doing the Insanity Workout.  You can read more about the Insanity Workout and my thoughts on Day 1 here.  There has been a lot of discussion on The Coupon Challenge Facebook Page, so I wanted to give you all an update – I fit into my Skinny Jeans today!  I slipped them on without any jumping, tugging or wiggling (you all know what I’m talking about!)

Here is a bit of am Insanity Workout Review:

I’ve completed Week 4 and start my Recover Week tomorrow.  I’m looking forward to a week of recovery, but I have no doubt that the week will still provide an intense workout.  I’m more nervous to start Week 6 which includes a new round of DVD’s for a Max routine.  I’ve definitely improved in my stamina, speed and power over the past 4 weeks, but I’m not sure I’m ready to take it to the next level!

My 4 weeks of the Insanity Work has changed my body and shown me that I really can “dig deeper” and improve my health.  Although, I both look forward to and dread working out each morning :)

Insanity Workout Day 1: The Fit Test Kicked My Butt!

If you’ve been following along on The Coupon Challenge Facebook Page, you know that I ordered the Insanity Workout.  There was so much discussion on my Facebook posts that I decided to share with you all as I make my way through the 60-day program.

I ordered the Insanity Workout on Amazon for $144.80 shipped – this is the same price as on the Beachbody website, but I had Amazon gift cards to help lower my OOP expense.  The price does vary on Amazon, so just be aware!

A Bit About Insanity: Shaun T’s Insanity workout is designed to be completed in 60 days.  The complete set includes a Elite nutrition guide, calender to track your progress, and 10 intense DVDs.  Each workout keeps you constantly challenged as you alternate between aerobic and anaerobic intervals performed at your max.  One reason I chose this workout is that no exercise equipment is required.  I also liked that I could have a “beachbody” in just 60 days!  We shall see….

I thought Day 1 would be easy peasy.  I mean, all I had to do was watch a short video outlining proper form and do a Fit Test.  How hard could that be, right?  WRONG!  The Fit Test kicked my butt.  Seriously, I had to stop the video 3 times and take a break!

Now, I’m not in bad shape.  I workout 5 or 6 times a week for about 1.5 – 2 hours each day.  My workouts include cardio, weights, floor exercises and stretching.  I can run on the treadmill and bike for miles.  Apparently, I was totally unprepared for 1 minute full-on Power Jumps, Suicide Jumps and Push-Up Jacks.  I was even winded after the warm up for Pete’s Sake!

What did I learn from Day 1 besides the fact that I’ve signed myself up for 2 months of pain?

  • Set up a small fan in the living room – that ceiling fan just doesn’t cut it!
  • A Towel is totally necessary
  • Working out in pants and a t-shirt is way too much clothing
  • It’s okay to hit pause, just do what you can and watch your form
  • WATER!

In addition to the Day 1 DVD, I took my before pictures and measurements and determined my necessary caloric intake for the next 60 days.  I should be consuming 1,900 calories by eating at least 5 meals per day.  That number includes my desire to lose weight (5-8lbs).  There is a pretty scientific formula included in the Elite Nutrition Guide to help determine your needs.  Had I wanted to maintain my current weight, I would have needed 2,400 calories per day!  That just tells you how intense these workouts are!

Tomorrow the actual workout begins with the Plyometric Cardio Circuit – oh my!

Protein, Kale & Berry Smoothie – Whey Protein Smoothie Recipes

Protein smoothies are a great post-workout meal.  They fill you up and provide your body with the nutrition it needs to repair muscles and recover from a workout.  I like to make my own smoothies at home since purchasing a pre-made smoothie can be expensive.

Kale is always in my smoothies. It’s a powerhouse of nutrition.  If you don’t have kale or want to switch things up a bit, use spinach.  I purchase kale in bulk and freeze.  The same goes for berries and bananas.  They freeze well and can save you a ton of money overtime.

Whey Protein Smoothie Recipes:

Ingredients:

1 Scoop Whey protein
1 Cup fat free milk (or water)
1 Cup fruit (I always do 1 banana plus a little bit of berries or peaches, depending on the season)
A few cubes of ice
Kale (to taste*)

Directions:

I start my blender with milk and kale since the kale needs to be pulverized more due to it’s tough cell walls.  Then add all your remaining ingredients to the blender.  Serve immediately.

Green Smoothie Recipe

*Add more kale gradually to your smoothies as you get used to the taste.  Adding just a few strawberries or blueberries helps mask the taste and allows me to add even more kale.

Kale Banana Peach Smoothie

In the image above, you can see the kale mixed with the milk at the bottom of the blender then the protein powder and topped with fruit.  You will also notice a bit of froth from blending the milk and kale.  Try not to add much more than a cup of fruit.  You don’t want too much sugar!

This is actually a double batch for hubby and myself :)

**Kid Tip:  Blend the smoothie without the protein powder.  Fill a cup for your child, then add protein powder and blend your smoothie.  Kids won’t even know you snuk green goodness into their drink :) If you’re trying to hide the green, the top image is made with more blueberries so it hides the green color.
