I know I’ve been slacking on the events front.  There is so much I want to post and working that around my family makes it difficult to stay on track.  Kiddos are in bed, so here are some events happening in Portsmouth, VA.  There are way too many things going on in Portsmouth, so I picked some to highlight.  Go HERE if you want more about what’s going on.

2nd Annual Cause for Paws Dog Walk and Fair – FREE??
Join us for a 1-mile family and dog friendly walk through historic, Olde Towne, Portsmouth! Fun, Food, Beverages and Children’s activities await!

9th Annual Power in the Park – FREE
“The Hottest Show on H2O” – Portsmouth offers one of the fastest race courses in the U.S. Several world records have been set on this well protected race site situated in a park setting. Come by boat or car and enjoy a day at the races.

When:
Saturday and Sunday April 17-18th 12pm - 5:00 pm

Portsmouth City Park

*We went to this a couple years ago.  Took a blanket and simple picinic and the kids had a blast!

Portsmouth Restaurant Week – Food Purchase
Most of the participating restaurants will provide price fix lunch menus and dinner menus. Portsmouth Restaurant Weeks’ beneficiary is EdMarc Hospice for Children, which serves families all over Hampton Roads. Atlantic Coast Kite Festival – FREE
A collaboration between the Courthouse Galleries in Portsmouth and the BeachEvents program, the Atlantic Coast Kite Festival is an exciting weekend of high-flying kites and fun for families, participants, and spectators of all ages!

Portsmouth City Park becomes the venue for the kite festival as kite fliers are invited to participate in workshops, view demonstrations, and learn techniques for flying kites of all shapes and sizes.

Pirates! Naval Shipyard Museum Exhibit – FREE
Join us for our May First Weekend event, for a fun, pirate filled day! Come meet the dreaded Moody Crewe pirates and muster in for the School of the Pyrate. Also, join our scurvy scavenger hunt and build your own pirate ship!

126th Annual Memorial Day Parade – FREE
The nation’s oldest annually held parade. The City of Portsmouth presents the 126th Annual Memorial Day Parade.  Annually, the Memorial Day Parade salutes the service and sacrifices of the men and women of the military and celebrates Portsmouth’s proud military heritage.

When:
Monday, May 31st 11am

Where:
Downtown Portsmouth
The Parade Route: The 1800 block of High Street at I.C. Norcom High School will be the starting point for the parade which will travel east on High Street; turn right on Crawford Street; and end at Columbia Street.

U.S. Army Band in Concert – FREE, Tickets Required
Since 1922, this superb ensemble has maintained a tradition of excellence as one of the premier musical organizations of The United States Army. The Band was founded in 1922 by Army Chief of Staff General John J. “Black Jack” Pershing to emulate European military bands he heard during World War I. The U.S. Army Band proudly plays an important role in events of national and international significance. Share this rousing performance with family and friends!

Third Annual Patriot’s Day – FREE
Step back in time! Enjoy craft demonstrations, musical performances, games, military drill, food and fun! As part of the Portsmouth Museums’ First Weekend Series, activities will be free and open to the public. Presented by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum

Celebrate Kids- It’s Your Day – FREE

Celebrate Halloween at the Courthouse Galleries and the brand new Andalo’s Clubhouse! Kids of all ages will delight in face painting, wizardry, magic, and storytelling! Create your own “haunted courtyard” art project. Enjoy spooky, creative, and fun scarecrows and pumpkin carving! Free with paid admission.v

Ships, Spooks & Seas at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum
Enjoy storytelling, activities and crafts including building a ghost ship, making a pirate flag and porthole monsters. Free with paid admission.

The Frightship at the Lightship PORTSMOUTH
The Lightship ship PORTSMOUTH is transformed into a haunted vessel for Museum Madness! Enjoy storytelling, meet the ghosts of sailors and pirates past, and enjoy the eerie sounds of maritime musician, Bob Zentz. Free with paid admission.

Olde Towne Safe Trick-or-Treat FREE
For children up to age 12.

Located on the seven historic blocks of High Street corridor between Effingham Street and Water Street.

Winter Wonderland: The Coleman Collection – $5 Fee
Now in its sixth year at the Courthouse Galleries, Winter Wonderland has settled into its new surroundings. Begin your holiday and New Year countdown with Holidays Around the World, which celebrates diverse cultures and traditions from many nations. Watch for the Snow Babies frolicking nearby in the courtyard.
