Thrifty Thursday: Ways to Save on Christmas Gifts

Last week I wrote about ways to save money for Christmas.  This week I wanted to talk about ways to stretch that savings.  Be creative and think of ways to maximize the money you have already put away.

–Use cash and save all receipts:  Use cash whenever possible, so you can’t spend what you don’t have. Also, make sure you save all receipts for returns.

–Use collective buying sites: The number of collective buying sites has increased dramatically.  Use these bargain sites to purchase gifts from retailers or purchase the deal of the day to give as a gift. Periodically I link deals from Groupon, Eversave,  Living Social, and Pilot Daily Deal (in VA).  Consider signing up to have daily deals sent directly to your inbox.

-Use swagbucks: Use Swagbucks to purchase Amazon or other gift cards to buy gifts or to use as gifts.  If you shop using an Amazon gift card, watch for deals eligible for free super saver shipping and subscribe & save to further reduce your expense.

-Enter giveaways: I’ve entered several giveaways lately with the intention of using the prize as a gift or to purchase gifts if the prize was in the form of a gift card.  It only takes a few minutes to enter, but you could score some free gifts.

–Shop using Shop at Home or Ebates: Earn cash back for your online purchases.  This could add up to a big savings if you’re a frequent online shopper.

–Shop clearance, ebay, craigslist and thrift stores: Don’t limit yourself to particular stores.  Shop around for the best deal.

–Shop Early:  Start your holiday shopping early so you can watch sales.  Additionally, you’ll be less tempted to overspend if you’re not feeling pressured because Christmas is next week!

–Make your own gifts: A few gift ideas include homemade cookie jars, homemade coupons, photobooks or use freebies to make a gift basket.

What are your tips for saving money on Christmas gifts?

Neat post – I LOVE to chop "after-Christmas" sales!

I just sent my first Christmas box out on Monday – by BFF lives in OR (I live in WI) and she LOVES to host a formal Christmas dinner. Last year in the clearance bins I found a beautiful 2-piece Christmas set – cloth napkins and placemats (retail: $25) and only paid about $3 per set. She has recieved them and is already planning this year's formal dinner!
