Flying With Kids

Traveling with kids can be both a fun adventure and unbearably stressful.  If you will be flying with children for the first time – you need to plan ahead to help ensure your travels will run as smoothly as possible.  Here are my Tips for Flying with Children:

1.  Talk about planes and flying in advance.  This is especially true if it’s your child’s first plane ride.  Consider checking out books from the library to help your child become comfortable with flying.  Don’t forget to talk about airplane safety and rules in advance as well.

2.  Allow your child their own carry-on.  Giving your child their own piece of luggage will help them feel more independent and in-control plus have the benefit of entertainment at their finger tips.  I prefer a backpack since kids can be responsible for these without adding something else for Mom or Dad to carry.  For me, having each child with their own “stuff” avoids fights over who gets what first.

3.  What to pack:

  • Snacks – kids want to eat constantly so make sure you can keep their tummy’s from grumbling.  Plus a hungry child is a grumpy child.  Make sure the snacks are easily consumed in flight – fruit, cereal or granola bars, banana bread and treats such as fruit snacks, candy or cookies work well.  If you’re flying during meal time, consider packing a muffin or sandwich.
  • Even if you grab a box of granola bars for $3.49 on your way to the airport – you’re getting 8-10 bars for that $3.49, not 1 bar for the same price in-flight.
  • Don’t forget a napkin for the tray, wet wipes and hand sanitizer.  I am a huge germaphobe – particularly on an airplane.
  • Blanket or jacket – You want your child to be comfortable in-flight.  Additionally, a favorite blankie may help your child nap or feel more relaxed.
  • Entertainment – pack activities to keep your child occupied throughout the flight.  New or forgotten books, coloring pages, crayons, travel games, cards and small electronics are just a few ideas.
  • Don’t over pack – keep in mine the length of your flight and how easily the contents of your child’s carry-on bag could get lost.  Allowing 5 DS games or marbles, may not be the greatest idea.

4.  Expect delays: Flight delay’s happen.  Remember to stay calm and factor in time for these delays in your travel plans.  Getting though security, making flight connections and extra potty breaks also makes everything take longer.  Ensure that you have allowed ample time to get to your destination, so you don’t arrive in a frenzy.

5. Window vs. Aisle Seat:  I see advantages to both of these prime location seats. If you are traveling with multiple children or adults – try to get both seats.  The window seat obviously provides a great view and opportunities for games and using your imagination (look for shapes, farms – some are square and some circle, colors, river lines, landscape variations, who lives there?, etc.).   While having the aisle seat means your not asking a stranger to get up every 10 minutes so your child can use the restroom.

6.  Pack an extra set of clothing.  Yes, your luggage may not arrive when you do.  But I’m talking about in-flight accidents that may require an outfit change.  Your child may get motion sickness, have a diaper blow out or simply spill their drink all over themselves.  It may also be a good idea to pack one of Dad’s t-shirt’s.  That way either parent will at least have a clean shirt if necessary.

*Remember that you can’t take beverages with you through security.  However, most flights offer free beverage service of soda and juice.

This is an example of what my child would have for a short flight:

  • Pencil bag with colored pencils and crayons
  • Coloring/Activity Book
  • Reading Book
  • DS with 1 game  and headphones (I would have 1 other game to avoid it getting lost)
  • Extra Clothes (baggie keeps it together plus could put dirty clothes back in)
  • Small Blanket
  • Snacks in baggie with napkin (I would have hand sanitizer and wet ones in my purse – plus gum for take off)

Thrifty Thursday: What to Do with Expired Coupons

by Dana Zeliff on September 22, 20112011-09-22
in Frugal Living

I’ve mentioned this before, but I thought another post would be beneficial.  As you know, stores DO NOT accept expired coupons.  Well,  what if you have coupons that expired before you could use them?  Throw them away?  No – Donate expired coupons to Military families overseas!

Commissaries & the PX overseas will accept expired coupons up to 6 MONTHS past their expiration date.  This is a fantastic way to support our Military families and it only takes a little bit of your time and postage.

  • Coupons must be cut and sorted (read the guidelines specific to the website listed below)
  • It is recommended that you only send coupons expired by 2 months
  • Send only manufacture coupons
  • These are APO address, so it’s the same shipping cost as mailing within the US

Choose one of the following websites to find an address to mail your expired coupons.  Why don’t I just list the addresses?  People get transferred or stop accepting coupons.  These sites keep addresses current for your convenience.

  1. Coupon Mom
  2. Grocery Savings Tips
  3. Overseas Coupon Program
  4. Coups for Troops

I have heard first-hand accounts of the benefits families overseas receive from the coupons.  They do truly appreciate your time and effort.

If you have another website with addresses or have benefited from these coupons, please leave a comment.

Thrifty Thursday: Save Money Shopping Online

by Dana Zeliff on September 15, 20112011-09-15
in Frugal Living

Shopping online can be a great way to save money.  You can shop from the comfort of your own home, have stores from all over the world at your disposal plus save gas & your time.

1.  Check the clearance section.  Just like in the store, head to the clearance or sale section of the website first.  You may find exactly what you’re looking for already marked down.

2.  Look for coupon codes.  Savings.com is a fantastic resource for finding coupon codes to all your favorite stores.  Do a quick search to find online coupon and free shipping codes to help you save money.

3.  Check “Deal of the Day” sites.  There are more Daily Deal sites than I could even begin to list.  Browse sites such as 6pm, HauteLook, Totsy, Zulily, and Rue La La to find discounts.  These offers usually go fast so setting up email alerts to your coupon email address is advisable.

4.  If all else fails – ask for a discount.  If you can’t find a coupon code, load your shopping cart with your purchase but don’t checkout.  Use the customer service feature to chat with a representative.  You will find that stores want you to complete your order, not jump over to their competitors site. The worst they can tell you is “no”.

5.  Check sizes and fit in-store then buy online.  Some products such as a running shoe need to fit properly.  Stop by your local store and try on a few pairs.  Make sure to write down the details of your favorite product and the size you need. Then come home and search online to find the best deal.

6.  Shop through a cash back site such as Ebates or ShopatHome.com to get cash back on your online purchase.  Every little bit you save will add up.

7.  Shop Amazon.  Amazon sells just about every product you could possibly need – clothing, games and electronics, books, toys, groceries and more.  I like to use gift cards earned from Swagbucks to spend even less.

Thrifty Thursday: It’s Okay to Miss a Deal

by Dana Zeliff on August 11, 20112011-08-11
in Frugal Living

When you first start couponing, you want to build a stockpile RIGHT NOW.  You run around to every store and buy all the products you can get your hands on that are cheap or free.  Taking into account the budget, cost of gas and our time gets pushed into the back of your minds.  You have 1 goal – to find the best deal.

Eventually, you get burnt out.  Going to 5+ stores each week gets exhausting, not to mention the prep time it takes to get ready for a shopping trip.  Even veteran coupon users fall into this trap.  I wanted to remind everyone today that:

IT IS OKAY TO MISS A DEAL

You don’t need to go to all the grocery and drugstores in your area.  You can even (gasp) skip shopping all together one week.  I haven’t been drugstore shopping much in months.  I’m trying to use what I have and purchase new items when I feel like it.  I’m okay with taking a break from shopping or from using coupons for awhile.

In all likelihood, you will be able to get the same or similar deal again in a few months.  Don’t feel like you have to get all the deals this week or request all the free samples.  Take your time and enjoy what you have already worked hard to accumulate.  Give yourself and your family a break from deal seeking every once in awhile.

I always find that I get excited about couponing again after a break.  Take a breath and enjoy the rest of your summer.  Get creative in the kitchen.  Have fun.  And remember that’s it’s okay to miss a deal.

Thrifty Thursday: Starting a Toy Closet

by Dana Zeliff on August 4, 20112011-08-04

Disclosure: This post may contain an affiliate link.

After taking a break from Thrifty Thursday for a few weeks, I’m ready to jump back in.  After my Target Toy Clearance shopping trip last week, I thought a post on starting a Toy Closet was in order.

What is a Toy Closet?
A Toy Closet is a place where you store or stockpile toys and gifts that you were able to purchase at a fantastic price to save as presents.  I don’t just keep toys in the Toy Closet but since I have young kids, that is about 85% of it.  I also keep baby shower and a few adult gifts.

What are the benefits of a Toy Closet?
The #1 benefit of having a Toy Closet is saving money.  You are purchasing items when they are at a rock bottom price to use later.  The other benefits are saving time and saving gas.  I’m sure at some point your child was invited to a birthday party and you had to run out to get a gift at the last minute.  Even if you found a good deal, you still spent extra time (and time is money) and used extra gas to make a special trip to the store.  Having a Toy Closet helps eliminate those special trips.

My rules for a Toy Closet:

Thrifty Thursday: Saving Money at the Zoo (Guest Post)

by Dana Zeliff on July 14, 20112011-07-14

Thanks to Budget Savvy Diva for this weeks guest post.  Tips and Trick to Going to the Zoo without Breaking the Bank:

After a nice and relaxing day with my sweetie at the San Diego Zoo, I realized how quickly all the costs really add up! You have ticket prices, food, drinks, parking, and sunscreen because you forgot yours at home. \

Zoo Coupons:

Before you even leave the house, you need to be in budget-savvy mode. Decide what zoo you will be attending and do a quick search for coupons for that zoo. To test this out I took a few local zoos around Southern California and all of them had a discount coupon of some kind. A little bit of leg work on your part will result in money staying in your pocket!

Memberships:

Almost every zoo has a yearly membership of some kind. This is perfect choice if you are deciding on going to the zoo again during the year. But be realistic, you may want to go to the zoo again but what is the real possibility of it happening. You do not want to waste money on a pass that you do not even use. Many zoos also allow you to use the amount you already paid for that day’s admission and apply it to the membership. Also many zoos have cross memberships; you pay one fee and get access to multiple zoos. So remember to do a little bit of research if membership is a possibility.

Returning Items For The Sake Of Making Money

by Dana Zeliff on July 5, 20112011-07-05
in Frugal Living

Disclosure: This post may contain an affiliate link.

I have now received 2 separate emails from fellow shoppers and heard from 2 store employees about a new problem that has been occurring in the couponing world.  I never really thought I needed a separate post about this, but I keep hearing about different issues.  I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but you may want to read my previous posts on Ethicial Couponing, Courteous Couponing and Illegal & Inconsiderate Couponing.

The “new” problem?  Returning products for the sake of making money.
