TLC Extreme Couponing: Affecting More than Just Coupons

by Dana Zeliff on April 20, 20112011-04-20
in Worth Reading

Disclosure: This post may contain an affiliate link.

The new episode of Extreme Couponing will air tonight, so I had to share this post with you.  My friend Lauren with Luxary Living Frugal Stylehas been following the couponers from TLC’s Extreme Couponing program closely.  She has uncovered more about the consequences other bloggers are facing just because there sites have a similar “Coupon Diva” name.

As if her fraud on national Tv was not bad enough she is now digging herself an even deeper hole(which I will get into towards the end of the post). Do I feel bad for her? No! She has brought it upon herself, although in the process she is hurting people that have done nothing wrong and causing them problems that should never be something they have to deal with.

The act of coupon fraud by J’Aime Kirlew has opened a door that is affecting many people, YES J’Aime’s facebook page was disabled too because it had the word Coupon Diva in it, however had she been using coupons CORRECTLY the owner’s of CouponDivas.com probably would not have started going after blogs, websites and facebook pages that used those words.

What TLC Extreme Couponing Doesn’t Tell You (Linked)

by Dana Zeliff on April 19, 20112011-04-19

I thought linking a great article that arrived in my mailbox was another great way to get the word out about “normal” couponing.  A few of things that Rasha mentions are:

– It takes time to coupon
– Extreme Couponers do pay for groceries
– Donating instead of Hoarding
– Store policies vary

Make sure to read the full article over at A Full Cup.

Thanks to Becky for sharing where to find this great article!

Ask an Accountant: Reminders Before the 18th

Thanks to Mom on Dealz for sharing her new series, Ask an Accountant!  Sharon is married to an experienced accountant, so if you’re looking for a professional to help out with taxes this year, give him a call.

Some of you may not know due to Emancipation Day, the Tax Deadline has been extended to Monday April 18th. Here are some last minute reminders for those of you who have waited until the last minute.

1. You can still make a 2010 tax deductible IRA contribution until Monday.

2. If you know you won’t have your paperwork ready in time, you will need to file an extension.

3. If you owed money this year, consider making estimated payments this year. The first estimate for 2011 is due Monday.

4. Consider opening an IRA for 2011. These are tax deductible and help you save for your future.

*Please keep in mind this post is for informational purposes only and answers given are very general. Many things depend on individual circumstances. Please contact your personal accountant or financial advisor for your particular situation.

TLC Extreme Couponing Controversy Update

by Dana Zeliff on April 15, 20112011-04-15
in Worth Reading

Disclosure: This post may contain an affiliate link.

Budget Savvy Diva is sharing a great post with us to give you more information on what’s happening with the controversy I posted about on TLC’s Extreme Couponing.  You all had such strong feelings about the obvious disregard for coupon guidelines that I wanted to bring you an update.  What she did effects all of us – making it harder to use coupons in the future.

In the most simple terms this couponer Jamie as shown below on National TV committed coupon fraud which she was caught for a year before. She also teaches couponers in a coupon class all about it — for a pretty penny — $35.00 !!!!!!

What she does wrong:

– There is a way to figure out coupon codes.

You see the bar code ?

There are numbers under the bar code – well you take the first set of numbers and you look for UPC on products from the same company and if they match up the coupon CAN be used on that other product. So people will take a high value coupon for one product and use it on a low cost product – sometimes being from completely different products. Like using a toothpaste coupon on detergent.

This is what she does – and she is proud of it.

The Couponer Under Fire Jamie

The repercussions of such couponing are large… such as lower value coupons and more extreme restrictions at store like Krogers

TLC said in an statement to EW: “We have received a strong response to the premiere and are listening to and reading the various comments around the show — as with all programs, we appreciate the feedback. While the series documents extreme couponing strategies, we take any concerns about specific tactics seriously and are looking into the situation.”

I’m hearing rumors that CIC is investigating her, but those are only rumors for now!

Do you think anything will happen??
