Extreme Couponing the “Normal” Way: Time is Money

Madame Deals has been working hard to provide tips for Extreme Couponing the “normal” way.  We are not all as extreme as some of the participating couponers on the new TLC series.  I thought this article was particuraly important, so Aimee was kind enough to let me share it with you all.  My biggest challenge is balancing coupons and my family.  My family will ALWAYS come first.  They may have to come shopping with me sometimes and watch me clip coupons, but I don’t miss sporting events or dinners just to shop.  I *gasp* sometimes skip great deals and freebies.

Enjoy…

Welcome to Couponing for the Extremely Normal! Have you watched the new TLC series “Extreme Couponing“? If so, you must realize how extreme these couponers can be.

Here at Madame Deals, we believe in saving by using coupons but not to the extreme extent which the TLC series portrays. We prefer to take a realistic approach to saving and stockpiling.

In order help you extreme coupon in a realistic way, we will be bringing you several tips each week. Here’s tip #5: My tip: is Time is Money and everything cost something!

Okay, so my take on tonight’s show is simple. It is buy what you need. If you do not have a baby do not buy diapers. It cost money to store things. It takes up space. The most important thing that it takes is time to plan trips, cut coupons, find the items, buy the items, take the items out of the car, bring them inside, and place them on shelves.

I went to the doctors with my son this week. I realized he will soon be 1 years old. I looked at him and wonder when he got so big. What day did he go from a little preemie to this 21lb baby? I guess I think this way time is money. I believe that you can’t get time back. I believe it is important to live in your budget. It is important to use coupons to help you do so. It is NOT important to plan trips to buy things you do not need. It is not important to run to the store to get the next best deal if it means missing the best deals which are those found at home.

* * * Let us know how we can help you on your Extremely Normal Coupon journey! * * *

Budget Savvy Diva has been working hard on a Budget Travel Series.  I have a few posts to share with you all that I hope you’ll enjoy!  First up:

Budget Savvy Diva Ways To SAVE at Walt Disney World

1. If possible, plan your Walt Disney World Resort trip during the off-season and you will usually discover significantly lower airfares and hotel/resort rates.

2. Shop at area factory outlet stores such as Orlando Premium Outlets, which sells Disney merchandise at significantly lower prices than you will find at stores within the Disney World theme parks.

3. Check out some of the free things to do at Disney World such as strolling around Disney’s Boardwalk and Downtown Disney Area, or hiking through the Disney Wilderness Preserve.

4.Take the family to one of the all-you-can-eat buffets that lie just outside Disney World property such as Sweet Tomatoes, Boston Lobster Feast, Golden Corral, Ponderosa, Sizzler or Angel’s Lobster & Seafood Buffet.

5.You will discover numerous accommodation choices within a five- to 10-minute drive of the main entrance to Walt Disney World Resort. For instance, you can find incredible deals on spacious accommodations at Westgate Resorts properties that provide convenient access to Disney World theme parks such as Westgate Lakes Resort & Spa, Westgate Palace, Westgate Towers, Westgate Town Center and Westgate Vacation Villas.

How Coupons Should Not be Used on Extreme Couponing (Guest Post)

by Dana Zeliff on April 11, 20112011-04-11
in Worth Reading

My blogging buddy Lauren over at Luxury Living Frugal Style has written a series of posts regarding the latest episode of Extreme Couponing on TLC.  While I think the show makes for good TV, I do wish they would add a disclaimer that results are not typical & stores have coupon policies and limits that were waived for the show (if applicable).

I’m not trying to start a heated debate, but I do feel that I should post one of her articles to make sure couponers (especially those who are new to the game) know that is important to use the coupons as intended and specified by the manufacture.  We all make mistakes but national television is not the place to use coupons incorrectly.  It is the stores prerogative to allow coupon limits to be exceeded, but I doubt the manufacturers agreed to have there coupons used outside of the written manner.

I work hard to share with you matchups within manufacture guidelines.  I have written an article on ethical couponing.  I feel strongly about this subject, so here is an unfortunate example of how coupons should not be used:

You can see more of my posts on this issue, at Luxury Living Frugal Style at www.midgetmomma.com here, here and here

I am sure all of you feel the same way I do about shopping, planning it important! We write lists and put what coupons we have to use next to the NAME of what we are buying…..well J’Aime doesn’t….look at this list!

Who the heck makes a list that looks like this??? NO PRODUCT NAMES just manufacturer names and codes, well there is only one conclusion to come from this….SHE IS USING COUPONS ON THE WRONG PRODUCTS! I am not going to get into coupon decoding, it is illegal and wrong and NOT the way couponers should use coupons. This is NOT the way REAL couponers USE coupons!

On her shopping trip, there were multiple times that she used coupons for items that SHE DID NOT EVEN BUY!

One example is Buddig lunch meat—I buy this lunch meat, I have NEVER seen a $1 off coupon that can be used on the SMALL packages! I have seen both insert ones ($1/4 2oz and $1 off 12-16oz) and the one that is $1 off a 16oz package that comes on the label of the package.

Here is what she bought

Here is the coupon used

This coupon is for $1 off of 1 12-16 ounce package! The ones she bought are 2 oz packages (the size difference in the packaging alone should be obvious)

I am not going to go in to all the fraud she committed while on the show, there is no reason to, FRAUD is FRAUD! And STEALING is STEALING, no matter how much or how little!

I know I personally have had issues when using the RIGHT coupons on the RIGHT products!

Feel free to share your thoughts. Please remember to use your “big girl” words.  Unnecessarily mean/rude comments will be deleted.

Thank you to Jillcataldo.com for the images.

Ask an Accountant: Home Office Space

by Dana Zeliff on April 10, 20112011-04-10
in Worth Reading

Thanks to Mom on Dealz for sharing her new series, Ask an Accountant!  Sharon is married to an experienced accountant, so if you’re looking for a professional to help out with taxes this year, give him a call.

Question:
How do I determine the amount of office space to use for a write off?

Answer:

A home office is defined by IRS guidelines as “any area of your home used exclusively for business”. This means, it cannot serve any other purpose other than business use. If an area of you home qualifies, the easiest way to determine the area is to estimate the suare footage of the business area of the home as a percentage of the entire square footage of the home.

This is reported on Form 8829, then you are able to apply that percentage to mortgage interest, real estate taxes, hazard insurance, repairs, and utilities and get a better deduction than you would normally get from those items on schedule A. The remaining percentage of the mortgage interest & real estate tax then goes on the appropriate line on Schedule A.

Here is an example
: Your home is 1,000 sqaure feet and your home office is 100 square feet. Therefore your business percentage is 10%. You would then apply the 10% to your mortgage interest, real estate taxes, hazard insurance, repairs, and utilities. Your remaining percentage of mortgage interest and real estate tax would be 90% and would go on your scedule A.

The time has to come to admit that we often put the one we love most at the end of our million mile long list. We make being in a relationship a chore instead of a wonderful experience. I am trying to remind myself that I am not only a mom but a wife. It is important to nurture your loved one just like you do for your kids. I am taking a moment, a couple of bucks, and some time to plan for a cheap date to bring them together to create a memory that will last long after the date is over.

Ask An Accountant: What to do with My IRA Rollover

by Dana Zeliff on April 2, 20112011-04-02
in Worth Reading

Disclosure: This post may contain an affiliate link.

Thanks to Mom on Dealz for sharing her new series, Ask an Accountant!  Sharon is married to an experienced accountant, so if you’re looking for a professional to help out with taxes this year, give him a call.

Question:
How I want to handle my rollover..In 2010 I rolled over all the money from my IRA (which started out as a 401K )to a Roth IRA. Do I want to split the taxable amount between 2011 & 2012 or do I want put in the whole taxable amount this year & take the tax hit all this year?

Answer:

If you think you will be in a higher tax bracket next year, then take it all now. If it will not make that much of a difference, split it to get refunds in both years. In the end you will most likely pay the same amount of tax on those dollars, you just have the option of paying the tax over 1 year or 2. Personally, I would opt for 2 years…(why pay the IRS now if they are allowing you to pay later with no penalty) You control the use of the money, not the IRS. This can be a gamble if tax rates increase, but I don’t think that wil happen for a few years.
