Dating on a Dime: Plant Flowers Together

by Dana Zeliff on July 15, 20112011-07-15

Creating quality time in a marriage or with a significant other is imperative to the strength of a relationship.  But how to you stay on budget with everything else going on in your lives?  Living on Love and Cents & Madame Deals have put together a great article for this weeks Dating on a Dime series:

The cheap date idea for this week revolves around my husband’s hobby and something I love.

My husband loves the “Bob” store also known as Lowes. It was named Bob’s store by our son who watched way to much Bob The Builders. He often visits to walk around the aisiles. He even dons his steel toe shoes for the occassion. He usually goes once a weekend at least to buy something that is “necessary”. It is fine since he gets a military discount and we each have $20.00 worth of fun money.

I happen to love flowers. I always have. I used to receive them often. I wondered why I no longer receive them. This is where men and women think differently. I asked Mr. Madame Deals, “Why, don’t you buy me flowers anymore?” His response was, “I give you flowers all the time.” This is when I questioned if he has a double life since he is often away for work. Ha? He then went on to explain all the flowers he has planted were to remind me that he loves me every season. Yes, he was saved and very clever and frugal.

I thought wouldn’t it be nice to have a date where we go to the “Bob” store and pick out flowers together, We could plant the flowers or plants near all my others and it would remind me that our love needs to be tended to. I firmly believe “Love” doesn’t just happen and being in a relationship takes effort. I think we are heading out this weekend to get my favorite Hydrangeas to plant. Mr. Madame Deals handles the yard work and making sure all the flowers he has bought me continue to thrive. The least I can do is join him for Suggest tags based on content an adventure at the “Bob” store. I know we will have more than a plant growing we will have a reminder that we worked together to plant something beautiful. I also have a whole new outlook on what the flowers in my garden mean. The moral of the story is you never know unless you ask. Your garden will also grow if you tell your partner your feeling and you address your concerns.

Stay Fit for Less (Guest Post)

by Dana Zeliff on July 15, 20112011-07-15
in Worth Reading

The following is a guest post from Mom on Dealz.  I love the childcare services at my  local YMCA, but it’s also an “extra” that we would drop if necessary.

If you’re a mom, you know how difficult it can be to fit in exercise. Many women join gyms and take advantage of their daycare facilities. Unfortunately, gym memberships were one of the first things to go when we cut our budget in order for me to stay home with the kids. However, staying fit and exercising are still top priorities for my husband and I. There are many ways we accomplish our goals in more frugal ways-

1. Running outside-I have always hated running. However, after having my second child, I knew I had to do something to lose the baby weight. I signed up for my first 5k for motivation-and it worked! I now run 3 times a week and take the kids with me. It has become part of our morning routine and they love it! Not only do they get fresh air and sunshine, we also get to talk about things in the neighborhood and I use it as a good time to practice colors by playing “I Spy” with Will (ie I spy a yellow truck).

2. Utilizing the “Free Zone” via my cable box-Our cable company has an on demand channel that offers free shows. One day while surfing the free categories I found some Exercise TV shows. I love these because they are divided up into various workouts such as cardio, dancing, weights, 10 min workouts, and specific body parts. I never have the excuse of not having time because the workouts vary in time from 10 min to 60!

3. Sharing/Swapping Home Workout Videos-Many of my friends work out at home as well. We all have pretty big libraries of DVDs so when we get tired of one we give them one and they give us one of theirs. Then we swap back later on.

4. Playing with the kids– I know, I know, this is a no brainer. However, Will is getting to the age where we can start teaching him actual sports and he is natural soccer player. Neither my husband or myself have ever played but I can tell you that kicking a ball around the back yard for 20 min can make your muscles just as sore as an hour long workout-plus your child will nap even better!

5. Yard Sales/Craigs List-These 2 places are excellent ways to save money on exercising! You can always find DVD’s, weights, bikes, or different machines/benches at yard sales on sale on Craig’s List. Many of these items are at “rock bottom” prices so you pay a fraction of their original cost. My parents got a Total Body Gym for $25 at a yard sale and it was in perfect condition!

How do you save money and get fit at the same time?

Disclosure: This post may contain an affiliate link.

We wanted to post another “Thank You” to all those who attended the first Coupon Meet held by The Coupon Challenge, Mom on Dealz and A Frugal Chick. We were blown away with all the expired coupons everyone brought to donate to Military families overseas. The coupons weighed right at 15lbs! Now, that is a LOT of coupons to be put to good use.

The coupons collected from the Virginia Beach Coupon Meet were mailed to:

Family Services/Airman & Family Readiness Center
Attn: Vic Villarreal
100 FSS/FSFR
Unit 4925 Box 280
APO AE 09459

Military bases overseas will accept expired grocery coupons up to six months past their expiration date. Please make sure coupons are only expired by a couple of months when mailing to allow for the coupons to be distributed and used by Military families. Don’t forget that you can also send non-expired coupons as well. It is also requested that coupons be organized into categories for easier handling.

*Registration is currently open for the Yorktown Coupon Meet on August 6, 2011. Please head to THIS post to find out more information.
