Fuel costs can be one of the biggest budget busters for American families. While the cost of gas seems to keep soaring and paychecks keep dwindling, more people are looking into saving money on gas. Check out these easy tips that will help you keep a few extra pennies in your pocket when you fill up your gas tank.

6 Tips for Saving Money on Gas:

Fill Up Regularly

A low fuel light certainly isn’t an emergency, but it certainly not a good idea to ignore it. Plan to fill up your gas tank regularly, so you don’t have to deal with the hassle of running out of gas. A full tank will be much more efficient than a tank that is running on empty. When a tank drops too low, your vehicles fuel lines will begin to suck up whatever crud might be floating at the bottom of the tank. This can ruin your gas mileage, ruin your fuel filter, and bring you a major headache.

Fill Your Tank Early in the Morning

Fill up your tank early in the morning before the heat of the day has had a chance to warm up the underground tanks at the gas station. When it gets hot later on in the day, you will end up getting more gasoline vapor when you fill up and that means you will be paying for less actual gasoline.

Take Advantage of Savings Cards

There are a number of gas stations that offer special savings cards. Check around for the best deals. Some stations in your area may offer a few cents off of a cash fill-up while some grocery stores will offer savings when you use their shopper rewards card at the store such as Kroger then fill your tank at their on-site gas station.

Give Your Engine a Tune Up

Take your car in for regular servicing to keep the fuel efficiency at peak levels. New air filters, spark plugs, wires and other engine services can make a difference in your car’s fuel efficiency. Remember that even a few extra miles per gallon will help you save a little bit of money on gas.

Keep Your Tires Properly Inflated

Over or under inflated tires can have an effect upon your vehicle’s gas mileage efficiency. Check your owner’s manual for the proper tire pressure for your car then keep a regular check on the inflation levels.

Tame Your Driving Habits

Quick accelerations can suck up your gas and result in terrible gas mileage. The same goes for driving way too fast. Take it slow and easy on the gas pedal and the brake pedal and not only will you drive safer, but your vehicle’s fuel efficiency will show some improvement.

You have no control over the per gallon price of gasoline and will continue to be at the mercy of fluctuating prices. You can, however, take simple measures to ensure that your vehicle is getting the best gas mileage and fuel efficiency possible. Better efficiency ultimately means savings in your pocket.
