Saving Money on Baby Care is Easier than You Think!

Being frugal is one skill that parents have to learn quickly if they hope to survive when baby arrives.  Babies are extremely expensive even in the best of circumstances. If you learn about saving money on baby care before you even have a baby, you will be way ahead of the game.   Many new parents don’t realize how expensive a baby can be and they end up spending more than they have to. Here are some tips that can help you weather the coming diaper storm:

Don’t Fall for Fancy Products

Yes, you do want your baby to smell good. However, many products are sold that you don’t even need. Parents sometimes buy these products just because they are scented. Babies actually have a wonderful smell naturally as long as they are properly changed and cared for. The reality is that these scented products, like baby powder, can cause more problems than they resolve. You probably already have what you need in your own cabinets.

Here are some tips to consider:

Are You Saving Money Buying Clothing?

There are plenty of ways you could be saving money buying clothing. If you aren’t saving money right now, it’s time to learn the ins and outs to start. This is especially true if you have children. Since they tend to go through surprise growth spurts, a few tips can help you save quite a bit.

Practical Tips to Save Money Buying Clothes:

Plan Ahead at the End of the Season

Clothing stores tend to put just about everything on clearance at the end of the season. You may not need these items until the next year, but you can always pack them away for a new wardrobe next season. Sometimes you can even get clothes for under a dollar at the end of the season. This makes end of season shopping well worth your while. If you happen to be buying for your children and they still can’t wear them the next season or they happened to grow more than you expected, you only lost a couple of dollars. You can probably even get more than you spent by selling the item online or a yard sale.

Centsible Chic: DIY Chair Makeover

DIY Chair Makeover

{Pin It}

How many times have you been driving down the road, and seen a sad little chair just hanging out on the curb? Maybe it is a tad dirty, scratched up, or just plain ugly.  Either way it is destined for the garbage dump. Or is it?

Why not rescue that ugly or beat up old chair and turn it into something amazing? With just a little work and minimal supplies, you can easily make an old chair into something new and fresh. Not sure how? Take a look below at how you can get “centsibly chic” and do your very own DIY chair makeover!

DIY Chair 1

First, let’s take a look at the supplies you will need. You may not use all of these items, but they are helpful to have on hand just in case. Most of these items can be found at your local craft store.

Supplies Needed:

-An old chair. Look for something solid. Everything else in the way of flaws can typically be fixed so don’t get too hung up on those. Check out your local thrift stores and garage sales for inexpensive finds. Our sample picture chair was a garage sale steal for just $1.

-Paint.  Spray paint or roll on paint will do. Choose a color and finish that speaks to you! For our sample picture we used “Colonial Red” by Rustoleum for around $3.50 a can.

-Paint brushes

-Sandpaper, mid grade

-Old towels

-Drop cloth

-1 yard of fabric. For our sample picture we used a piece of upholstery fabric found at a yard sale for just $1. Visit thrift stores or browse the bargain bins at your local craft store.

– Staple gun, staples

-Screwdriver

-Febreze

-Baking Soda

Directions:

1. Before you begin, lay a drop cloth down to protect your floors or driveway.

2. Next, take a damp cloth and some basic household cleaner and wipe down the hard surfaces removing any dirt and debris.

3. Using your sandpaper, lightly sand any flaws or scratches to smooth them out. Lightly sanding the wood will also help the paint adhere better.

4. Remove the chair cushion by unscrewing the four screws that can be found underneath the cushion. Set these aside in a safe place so you don’t lose them! Set the cushion aside.

5. Now you are ready to paint! If rolling on your paint, apply two coats and allow for plenty of drying time in between. If spraying, hold your can a good 6 inches away and begin spraying, moving the can slowly. Apply a second coat if needed.

6. While your paint is drying, you can start working on the seat cushion. If it is stinky or dirty, you can sprinkle some baking soda on it and use a vacuum attachment to clean it off. You can also give it a generous spray of Febreeze to freshen up the fabric and remove odors.

7. Now that your cushion is all fresh and clean, you can recover it with the fabric of your choice. To do this, turn it over and place it face down on the back side of the fabric. Pull the fabric over the sides of the chairs, and pulling it tightly, use your staple gun to secure it into place. Do this slowly while pulling slowly, so you can be sure you get a good fit that is wrinkle free. Staple all along the perimeter of the seat, being careful not to cover the drill holes.

8. By now, your paint should be dry and your cushion can be placed back on the chair. To do this, simply put the cushion back on and use the screws to secure it.

9. To finish, you can take your sand paper and lightly distress the corners for an aged look, or just leave as is.

DIY chair 2

That’s it! In no time flat and with minimal supplies;  you can turn an old chair into something chic! This chair is now a far cry from its original form, and looks like something straight out of a boutique. Little would anyone know it was really a garage sale find. So keep your eyes peeled and the next time you see a piece that needs a little TLC, you know exactly how to do it.

May Seasonal Fruits & Vegetables

One of the best ways to save money on Fruits & Vegetables is to buy what’s in season.  Also, you’ll want to stock-up and freeze or can some for later use when you come across a good sale so that you can have a variety to choose from through-out the year.

One of my favorite things to do when apples are in season and cheap is to make homemade sugar free cinnamon applesauce!  I also freeze all types of berries and pineapples for my protein smoothies.

Here’s what to look for on sale this month at your local Grocery Store and Farmers Markets:

FRUITS VEGETABLES
Bananas
Blackberries
Raspberries
Strawberries

Artichokes
Asparagus
Avocado
Beets

5 Frugal Living Ideas

 5 Frugal Living Ideas

{Click to Pin It}

Who doesn’t want to learn how to save more on their daily expenses? Times are tough and even those with money may want to live frugally to ensure their money lasts.

If you’re planning for retirement, have a family and kids or even if you’re a college student looking to have a little more left over at the end of the week, here are 5 frugal living ideas you can begin using today.

5 Frugal Living Ideas:

1. Adjust your monthly food budget – How much do you spend on food? Chances are high that you’re spending more than you should be, even if you’re already trying to pinch pennies. The first step? Stop eating out. The food is overpriced and it’s usually not good for you anyway. If you love eating out, make it a special treat for only once a week or once a month.

Another good tip is to reduce the amount of pre-processed foods you buy. These foods are expensive and they don’t have as many nutrients as fresh foods, meaning you get hungry again end up eating more. Some other ways to save on your monthly food budget are to use coupons and to save your leftovers. So many families throw perfectly good food in the trash. That’s like throwing your money away!

2. Pool your resources – When you reach out to those around you and begin to share your resources, you can really save some money. Create a trade or barter group to get rid of extra and buy things at a cheaper rate. Carpool with other families to save gas and keep your car running longer. Get in close with other parents and work together to handle the costs and responsibilities of raising kids. A nice set of hand me downs can work wonders when money is tight.

3. Commit to a “no-cost” entertainment schedule – We spend money all the time on entertainment. Going to the movies costs nearly fifty bucks for an average couple with tickets, popcorn, drinks, candy. You get the idea.  Want to attend a concert? Chances are you will spend some serious cash there too. If you really want to drop your spending, commit to a no-cost entertainment lifestyle for a time.

Spend a month only doing things that are free or very low cost. Take a walk, go swimming, play some basketball or camp out for the weekend. These are only a small handful of ideas that you can add to with a little thought.

4. Reduce, reuse and recycle– By practicing the 3 R’s, you’re helping the environment and your bank account at the same time. You should start with reducing any bills, obligations or purchases you don’t have to make. You can also reduce clutter in your home and sell it on a site such as Craigslist or trade it for things you need, avoiding having to buy new.

You should also try to find ways to reuse things whenever possible. There are different degrees of what is “acceptable” when it comes to reusing and really only you can decide what works for you. Look at your own life and habits and examine some ways that you can reuse things and save money.

Finally, recycle when you can and accept recycled items. If you must buy new, consider buying products made from recycled materials. You complete the circle.

5. Avoid long term commitments and contracts– Many people get sucked in by “good deals” that offer you something for free in exchange for a long term commitment or contract. The perfect example would be cell phone plans. This is tricky because it may seem like a good idea up front. In the long run, you’re paying more whether you need it or not and if you try to get out of the contract, you’ll be hit with big penalties.

Are there any other important things that you do to help save in your everyday life? Are there any tips you would add to these frugal living ideas?

Household Money Saving Tips
{Click to Pin It}

The price of food and other necessities continue to rise and the economy is recovering slowly.  This has many households looking for ways to save money.  There are many things you can do to cut back on your spending, without reducing the quality of life you’re used to.

Have a family meeting to discuss the importance of saving money and to talk about ways you can cut back on your spending. Below are three household money saving tips that can help you get started.

Household Money Saving Tips:

Cut Back On Your Energy Usage – Cutting back on your energy usage is a great way to save money.  There are a lot of small things you can do around the house to make a difference. You can start by adjusting your thermostat up or down just a few degrees to save energy.  As well as keeping those filters changed. When the system is running smoothly, it uses less energy.  Make sure to read my post on 10 Frugal Heating Tips to help you save more on heating.

Additionally, when not in use cut off and unplug electronics.  You can also turn off lights, fans, TVs, etc when you leave the room, even if you plan to return shortly.  Following these simple rules can help you save energy, which means you’re also saving money.

Don’t Impulse Buy – Do you or someone in your home tend to buy things on impulse? This gets a lot of people in financial trouble. You have to fight the urge to buy that big screen TV just because it’s on sale. Sure, it’s a great deal but do you really need it? If not, then it’s a waste of money.

Many people also have a tendency to impulse buy when they go grocery shopping. If you catch yourself putting things into the cart that looks good at the time but that you really don’t need, it’s time to make a grocery list and follow it precisely.  When you stick to the list, you’ll buy items for meals instead of junk food and you won’t have to go back out the next day to buy something for dinner.

Cut Out Unnecessary Trips – Sometimes, you’ll find the need to run out to the store for an item or two but for the most part, you can cut out a lot of unnecessary trips to the store and other places if you just plan better.

Stop by the store on your way home from work instead of going home and then back out again to pick up that gallon of milk or loaf of bread. Combine trips whenever possible and if you don’t really need to go out, stay home.  Think of all the money you can save in gas and wear and tear on your vehicle!

The money you save can go towards a nice family vacation or anything else your family agrees to save towards together.

By making a few simple changes around the home and by being conscious of how much money you waste, you can cut back on your spending and these household money saving tips can help.
