Kids Meals 4 Free Discount Code (Hampton Roads Locals)

by Dana Zeliff on April 5, 20112011-04-05
in Hampton Roads Locals, Other Deals

Disclosure: This post may contain an affiliate link.

Eating out with kids can get expensive!  And I’m not one to go to a restaurant on a particular night just so my kids can eat free.   Just one of my quirks.

If you live in the Hampton Roads area of Virgina (or are planning a visit), purchase a Kids Meals 4 Free card and get 1 FREE kids meal with the purchase of an adult entree.   That’s a savings of about $6 per kids meal!

Each card is only $19.95, but you know I can’t post something without a discount.

Use promo code couponchallenge at checkout to receive 35% off your entire order!

A few restaurants I’m looking forward to are:

  • Firehouse Subs
  • The Broken Egg Bistro
  • Chili’s
  • Hickory Grill

More Info:
With over 70 restaurants to choose from (and more being added), we’re sure you will find something on our list to please your family’s appetite!   Our current cities include Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Newport News, Suffolk, Hampton Roads, and Williamsburg !

With a KidsMeals4Free card, you have the flexibility to eat where you want, when you want, without breaking the bank!  You don’t have to worry about going to restaurants on certain nights or at certain times for free kids’ meals.

*Cards are valid for 90 days after purchase
*Cards are valid at participating restaurants only

~Stay tuned for a giveaway coming later this month 😉

Reader Q & A (Thrift Stores)

by Dana Zeliff on July 27, 20102010-07-27
in Hampton Roads Locals, Uncategorized

Disclosure: This post may contain an affiliate link.

I received a comment regarding shopping at local thrift stores and I’m hoping to get reader help.  I rarely get to the store anymore, so it’s been awhile since I’ve been thrift store shopping.
Readers: Please leave a comment with your thrift store shopping tip or your favorite store/time for finding bargains.

A Few Tips for Shopping Thrift Stores:

1.  Check for the sale of the day when you enter the store.  Salvation Army has colored tags, and you’ll see a sign at the door letting you know the color tag on sale for the day.  Also, know the days your local store does markdowns (see below).

2.  Know sizes and dimensions of items you’re looking for.

3.  Know price points for the items you’re looking for.  Example: $10 for a pair of jeans would be expensive.  I could get that on markdown at the store for NEW jeans.

4.  Make nice with the cashier.  Cashiers can tell you the day new shipments come in, markdown days and other need-to-know information.

Hampton Roads Thrift Stores:

The 3 best thrift stores in my area (that I’m aware of) are:

Salvation Army in Greenbrier
-couldn’t get anyone on phone to confirm sale dates

Salvation Army on VA Beach Blvd:
  -Colored tags everyday
-Tuesday: 25% off with Military ID
-Wednesday: 50% off ALL clothing and accessories
-Thursday: Senior Citizen Discount (55+ years)

DAV on VA Beach Blvd (across from Salvation Army):
-Markdowns start on Monday and go through entire week

Free & Cheap Summer Fun

by Dana Zeliff on June 30, 20102010-06-30
in Events/Kid Fun, Hampton Roads Locals

Disclosure: This post may contain an affiliate link.

Summer is upon us.  The kids are out of school and I’m looking for ways to keep them busy.  Getting them all tired out for an early bedtime is just an added bonus.  I’ve added specific links for my area, but you should be able to take the ideas and find places in your neck of the woods.

Library –  The public library is always a good place to take the kids during the summer (and all year long).  Reading is essential for kids, and you can stay cool during the heat of the afternoon.  Head to your local library during storytime to maximize the fun.  Don’t forget about the Border’s and Barnes and Noble summer reading programs for all the books you check out.

Parks-My family loves to go to the park.  Parks have the obvious swings and slides but don’t forget about the open play area for the kids to run around in.  Play a game of tag, bring the baseball to throw, pack a picnic, whatever your kids like to do.  A few to try: Fun Forst, Northwest River Park, Oak Grove Park, Mt. Trashmore, First Landing Park (formally Seashore State Park), 1st Street at the Oceanfront.  Try a different park in your area each week to mix it up a bit.

Vacation Bible School – My kids attend at least 1 vacation bible school program during the summer.  Look for signs outside local churches.  VBS is free although some require a donation of school supplies or items for a specific charity.  The kids are learning values and interacting with other children. Bonus? Parents get a break which makes it even better!

Minor League Sports – Tickets for minor league sporting events tend to be less expensive and more manageable for a family to afford.  The Norfolk Tides offer many incentives to get you into the park.  If the kids can hang, pick a night with fireworks.

Movie Theatres – Theatres seem to be competing for your patronage this summer, so take advantage of the discounts on the hot summer afternoons.  Check out the Regal, Cinemark, and AMC deals. Also, Cinema Cafe offers $1 tickets on Twisted Tuesdays.

Bowling – Just like the discounted movies, you can bowl cheap this summer.  Kids Bowl Free at AMF or purchase discounted lanes for the entire family.

Free Workshops – Check Home Depot, Lowes, Michael’s, and Bass Pro Shops .  All offer free or cheap workshops for kids.

Local Amusement parks – We like to get a seasons pass to Busch Gardens, Watercountry USA or Ocean Breeze when the budget allows.  I do like that Busch Garden’s offers a deal for VA residents called a Fun Pass.  Pay the price of a one day pass and use it during the entire summer season.  Remember to pack a lunch or eat before you go in the afternoon to avoid blowing your food budget.

Museum’s –  Look for coupons and special discounts (such as in the entertainment book) to give the kids a little culture during their summer break.  Try the VA Living Museum, Chrysler Museum, Air and Space Center, Children’s Museum, VA Aquarium, Nauticus, Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown, or Mariner’s Museum.

Outdoor Attractions –  As with museums look for coupons and discounts. Try the Norfolk Zoo, Botanical Gardens-WOW, or Bluebird Gap Farm.  I like to go with friends. The kids have someone to run around with, and I get an adult to talk to.

Take a day or overnight trip – Go camping, head to North Carolina,  Washington DC, Lake Gaston or the Shenandoah Mountains.  You could always try camping in the backyard to avoid a site fee.  Derrick will be taking Moneyboy camping for the first time this year.  We’re also thinking of leaving for the DC Zoo early one morning and driving back that same evening.  Our biggest expense will be the gas since I’ll pack our food before heading out.

The Beach – If you live in Hampton Roads, chances are there is a beach not too far from you.  I like to go to the bay, Sandbridge or around 80th street at the Oceanfront.  I prefer areas with less tourists.  My kids could play in the sand and splash in the waves for hours.  Pack some buckets and shoves, plenty of snacks and water and you’re set.

Just get outside – Take a walk (maybe play I Spy), take a bike ride (try Dismal Swamp Trail), or just play in the backyard.  You could turn on the sprinkler, get $1 water squirter at the Dollar Tree, kick the ball or eat lunch outside. Your imagination is the limit.

Pool – The chances are pretty high that you have access to a pool somewhere.  Are you a YMCA or Rec Center member?  Ask a  friend, family member or neighbor.  My kiddos would swim all day if I let them.  Monekyboy is a little fish now and LuLu is learning.  She still wears a floaty suit when we’re not practicing but as long as the suit is on, she’s good to go.

Night Activities – TGIF at Town Point Park and Mt. Trashmore Movie Night

I’d love to hear about other ideas you may have

My Goal Prices

by Dana Zeliff on June 10, 20102010-06-10
in Budget, Hampton Roads Locals

Disclosure: This post may contain an affiliate link.

The prices listed below are what I typically pay for a product.  I used an asterisk to note the items that I can usually get for FREE. Toothpaste at $0.24 each is a good price. I might purchase 1 or 2 depending on how many are in my stockpile. I won’t purchase a lot until I can get it for free since it is an item than I know I can get free if I’m patient.  I tend to really stockup on an item if I can get if for less than the price listed.

I’ve listed a few items simply as free.  Frankly, I can remember the last time I actually paid anything for those items.  If I did I must have run out or needed to bump up my total for a promotion.  I guess a good price on BBQ sauce would be less than $0.50 and a small bottle of dish soap $0.25.

These are prices that I pay in the Hampton Roads area of VA.  Prices vary by region but hopefully this will give you an idea of the prices I shoot for in my shopping.  Keep a record of your spending to see what prices are right for you.

  • Paper Towels $0.29*
  • Tissues $0.25*

BIG Snow of 2010!

by Dana Zeliff on January 31, 20102010-01-31
in Hampton Roads Locals, Uncategorized

Disclosure: This post may contain an affiliate link.

If you live in Hampton Roads you know a snowstorm moved through the area yesterday. According to the paper today, it was the biggest snowstorm our area has seen for 20 years! Typically, snow for us is classified as a light dusting that ices the roads and closes the local schools. I’m not a big fan of snow (well, the cold) but the kids LOVED it! I’m fortunate to have a husband that is willing to stay out with the kids as long as it takes for them to become popsicles. He had a blast with them yesterday, and they are back at it again this morning. “Lulu” is dressed in her brother’s gear, it may look like I have 2 boys but hey, it kept her warm!

Yesterday after wet clothes and lots of hot coco, I cooked a little for Freezer Cooking Day and organized my coupon binder. I had let it pile up for a month and let me tell you, it wasn’t pretty. I missed ALOT of great deals the past couple of weeks, and when I was posting deals I couldn’t be sure if we really received the coupon in our area. I don’t clip EVERY coupon but most of them.

Here’s a look at before:
After:
I’m very proud of myself for getting it all done.  When you let things go it takes about 3X as long to get it back together.  Today I plan to cook more for Freezer Cooking Day (really it’s Days for me) and enjoy the kiddos!
What did you do during the snow day?
