Other Uses for Rice

You may enjoy eating rice as a side dish or in a casserole, but did you know that rice has other practical uses as well? It turns out there are all sorts of creative uses for rice that you can try, and since rice is so inexpensive to buy, this is excellent news!

Take a look below at 10 other uses for rice that you can try.  You may never look at rice the same way again.

1. Save your cell phone. This is one of the best uses for rice there is. If your phone gets wet, place it in a bag of rice and let it sit overnight. The rice will help absorb the moisture and in many cases, can save your phone. This method works best when done immediately after the phone gets wet.

2. Soothe soreness. Fill a tube sock with dry rice and tie the sock closed with a knot. Place the sock in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time until it is warm. Use the heat pack to soothe sore muscles or a sore stomach.

3. Clean out slender bottles. If you are trying to wash out a slender bottle or glass, add some dry rice to the inside and shake it around. It will get into those tight spaces and help loosen dirt and debris.

4. Keep salt from sticking. Avoid annoying clumps in your salt shaker when you add a few grains of rice to it. The rice will help absorb the moisture which is what causes the salt clumping in the first place.

5. Exfoliate your skin. Dried rice can be used as an exfoliate on your skin. Just add a teaspoon of dried rice to your body wash and it will help remove dry skin and reveal brighter, fresher skin instead.

6. Fry food with perfection. Tossing food into oil that is too hot or too cold is the worst! Instead, check the heat of your oil when you  toss a grain of rice in it. If it pops and floats to the top it is ready. If it sinks, the oil is too cold. If it burns, turn that heat down!

7. Make a weight. If you need some weight to hold a tablecloth down, to hold a door closed, or to hold balloons down, just use rice. A bag filled with rice makes the perfect weight for these jobs and more.

8. Create a sensory experience. Fill a box or drawer with rice and toss in measuring tools and other handheld tools. Allow kids to play in the rice and practice their scooping, pouring, and measuring. It is a sensory experience they are sure to love.

9. Get fruit ripe. If you need to ripen food faster place it in a bag with some grains of rice. The rice will help absorb any moisture and speed up the ripening process.

10. Make noise makers for kids.  Fill a toilet paper tube with rice and secure the ends closed with tape. You can also put dried rice in between two paper plates and secure them closed with tape. Now just turn on some music and let kids make some fun noise!

Are you inspired yet? Grab a bag of rice and give some of these other uses for rice a try!
